Singapore Primary Chinese practice · P1–P6 A brave voice
starts small.

Help your child build confidence in Singapore Primary Chinese, from P1 to P6. Little Orchid turns all 2,296 MOE 生字 into focused listening, oral reading, vocabulary, 听写, tone and handwriting practice. Everything — including 5,160 Mandarin recordings — stays inside the app. No internet, account or ads.

Free: the first four lessons of every level, all six practice modes.

Help your child improve
Primary Chinese at home.

Little Orchid is not a tuition centre. It is structured, independent practice for the words children meet in Singapore Primary Chinese — useful between school lessons, alongside Chinese tuition, or whenever a child needs calmer repetition at home.

听说读写 · Practice

Six ways to practise
one character.

MOE assesses 听, 说, 读 and 写. Little Orchid drills all four plus 声调, and keeps a 错题本 of everything missed.

  • 听 · Listening

    听一听,选出你听到的词语

Pick the word you heard — from four close look-alikes, 眼睛 against 眼镜, never three random words.

  • 说 · Read aloud

    听一听,再大声读出来

Hear the model, read it back, then mark it honestly: 读得清楚 / 有点结巴 / 不会读.

  • 读 · Word quiz

    读一读句子,选出合适的词语

Choose the word that finishes the sentence. Only one option can be right.

  • 听写 · Spelling

    听一听,把词语写出来

The dictation a 华文 teacher gives — the 例句, a pause, then 写衣服的衣.

  • 写字 · Handwriting

    一笔一画,跟着描红

Trace every stroke in order inside a 田字格. Order, direction and shape are all checked.

  • 声调 · Tones

    听一听,选出正确的声调

A miss is named, not just marked: 正确的是第二声。

注音 · Reading

The pinyin sits above
the character.

The way MOE Primary readers print it — not on a line underneath. A child who cannot yet read a character reads the syllable over it; an older one checks only the ones they are unsure of.

例句 · In a sentence

I can put on my clothes by myself.

衣服 is yī fu — the second syllable is 轻声, not . Every card's pinyin is checked tone by tone before it ships, and where the printed pinyin and the recording could ever disagree, the recording wins.

楷体 · The script children copy

Set in the same face
as the textbook.

MOE textbooks print 生字 in 楷体 and children copy those shapes, so Little Orchid bundles that face — the 撇, 捺 and 钩 endings stay visible everywhere a character is taught, and no phone can substitute a Japanese font that draws 直, 骨 and 令 wrongly for 简体中文.

whatever this device reaches for

If these two look the same, this device happens to have a Simplified Chinese face installed. Plenty do not.

田字格 · Writing

Trace it yourself.

The grid a Singapore P1–P2 写字本 prints, drawn here over real stroke data from the app. Press play, then write over it.

Every card names its 部首.

妈 carries 女 (woman); 河 carries 氵 (water) — so a child builds up meaning alongside the shape.

间隔复习 · Progress

Words come back the day
they start to fade.

Memory falls away after a new word is learned. A well-timed review lifts it back to full strength, and each return buys a longer interval. This first-week illustration shows the idea; Little Orchid's actual FSRS schedule adapts every date to the learner.

The night before 听写,
see which words are safe.

Every character in the lesson is tinted by how firmly your child is actually holding it, with the score printed in the corner too. A character never met keeps plain paper and no score at all — “never seen” and “seen and fading” are different things to a parent.

A settled word left over a school holiday still reads warm. Nothing here re-colours three weeks of work as unlearned.

错题本 · The mistake book

Misses are stored with the answer the child picked instead, so the parent summary names the failing word and the wrong choice — 选了「眼镜」 — which is what a 华文 teacher asks for.

生长记录 · The garden

One orchid, one school year.

Meeting new curriculum characters grows one 兰花 through 36 stages, from 种子 to 兰王. Every primary level has its own species.

蝴蝶兰 · Phalaenopsis

种子 A seed A seed is resting in the soil. Meet new words to wake it.

Stage 1 of 36 0 生字 met

Six levels.
Six living silhouettes.

P1's broad Phalaenopsis faces, P2's flowered Dendrobium canes, P3's clustered Epidendrum heads, P4's tailed Masdevallia, P5's cascading Cycnoches swans and P6's hooded Catasetum are the same species now drawn in the app.

Only meeting new 生字 feeds the plant. Reviews, drills and missed weekends never shrink it; each session moves the next leaf, root, spike or flower a little further.

Beside it, 50 achievements reward steady practice in every skill: 耳聪 Sharp ears, 朗声 Clear voice, 正音 True tones, 订正 Corrections done.

    课文 · Curriculum

    Taken verbatim
    from the MOE lists.

Every card is a Singapore MOE 生字 from the official 《欢乐伙伴》 / 《欢乐伙伴 2.0》 lists — 2024 syllabus for P1–P2, 2015 for P3–P6. Each character keeps its classification, so you know whether it needs reading only or handwriting too.

The official MOE lists determine every 生字 and whether it is 识写 or 识读. Little Orchid keeps that source classification attached to the card.

    • 2,296 regular cards map directly to the published Primary 1–6 character lists.
    • Vocabulary and example sentences are learning enrichment. Automated checks enforce pinyin alignment, audio coverage, stroke data and radicals; the textbook and teacher remain the final reference.

Where a term's lesson list is not confirmed, the app says 等学校名单 · School list needed rather than inventing one. Full provenance is in the terms.

    Recorded, not synthesised.

5,160 Mandarin recordings — one for every character, word and example sentence — all inside the app, in one voice at one speed. The app never falls back to your phone's text-to-speech, so a word sounds identical on every screen your child meets it on.

    The three exceptions,
    stated plainly.

Each happens only when a grown-up deliberately starts it:

    • Buying Little Orchid Plus. Google Play handles the payment; the app remembers only whether the full version is unlocked.
    • Sharing a backup. You pick where it goes in your own share sheet. It holds learner names and progress, so keep it private.
    • The read-aloud check. Your device's own speech recogniser is used, which may process the audio under Apple's or Google's policy — so it stays off until tapped, and marking yourself is always available instead.

What a parent sees in the app

    “No account. No ads.
    No child data online.”

The weekly parent report is made on the device and copied to your clipboard. There is no backend to send it to.

    常见问题 · Questions

    Straight answers.

01 Does it work without an internet connection?

Yes. Every lesson, stroke guide, Chinese font and Mandarin recording is already inside the app. Learning and progress stay on the device.

Only actions a grown-up chooses — a store purchase, sharing a backup, or the optional read-aloud check — involve another service.

02 Which syllabus does it follow?

Every card is a Singapore MOE 生字 taken verbatim from the official 《欢乐伙伴》 / 《欢乐伙伴 2.0》 lists — the 2024 syllabus for Primary 1–2 and the 2015 syllabus for Primary 3–6, because the 2024 lists only cover P1–P2. Each character carries its classification, 识写 (recognise and write) or 识读 (recognise only).

Little Orchid is an independent study companion, not affiliated with the Singapore Ministry of Education. Your child's textbook and teacher remain the final reference.

03 Can it replace Primary Chinese tuition?

Little Orchid is not a tuition centre. It does not teach live lessons, diagnose every language difficulty or mark compositions. It gives your child structured daily practice in MOE character recognition, vocabulary, listening, oral reading, ting xie, tones and handwriting between school or tuition lessons.

Some families use it for affordable independent practice; others use it alongside a teacher. Whether your child also needs tuition depends on whether they need practice, explanation, conversation or individual feedback.

04 What data do you collect about my child?

None. There is no sign-in, advertising, analytics or cloud profile. Learner names and progress stay on your device unless a grown-up chooses to share a backup.

05 How much does it cost?

The first four lessons of every level are free, with all six practice modes unlocked. Little Orchid Plus starts with a 7-day free trial, then costs $2.99 SGD per month through Google Play. It opens the full P1–P6 curriculum, daily study controls, unlimited learner profiles and the parent progress view.

It renews monthly until you cancel in Google Play and can be restored through the same account. iOS is coming soon.

06 Can two children share one device?

Yes. Each learner has their own profile, and each primary level is its own track with its own progress and orchid. Daily budgets are per level, so finishing P3 leaves P1 and P2 with their own new words still waiting. Multiple profiles are part of Little Orchid Plus.

07 Can I move a learner to a new phone?

Yes. The Parent tab packages one learner or every learner into a ZIP that you share through your own share sheet. Restoring names the learners in the archive before anything is written, and you choose whether to add them alongside the ones already on the device or replace everything.
